Metal Gear was developed and first published by Konami in 1987 for the MSX2 home computer. The game is considered to be the progenitor of the stealth game genre, in which avoiding direct encounter with the enemy is emphasized over attacking openly. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is a stealth game that was written and directed by Hideo Kojima and developed and published by Konami. It is the second game in the Metal Gear series and the direct precursor to Metal Gear Solid. It was initially released only in Japan for the MSX2 on July 19, 1990.

The game was developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and first published by Konami in 1998 for the PlayStation video game console. It is the sequel to Kojima's early MSX2 computer games Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The game featured an unprecedented amount of cinematic cut scenes rendered using the in-game engine and graphics, as well as voice acting in numerous codec sequences.

It is also the first canonical outing of the series for a portable platform, following the storyline of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

The game was announced at the Microsoft E3 2009 press conference, and is in development for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The series' former tagline, "Tactical Espionage Action", has been replaced by "Lightning Bolt Action", to fit the new protagonist, Raiden; the word Raiden is Japanese for "Thunder and Lighting".
